What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO, also called AEO or LLM SEO, explained without jargon: what it is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually works.
By Adam, founder of AI Visibility House · Updated 27 October 2026
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand more likely to be named, recommended and cited in answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Perplexity. It is also called answer engine optimization (AEO), AI search optimization or LLM SEO. GEO combines clear on-site facts, technical access for AI crawlers, and presence on the third-party sources that AI assistants rely on.
Where the term comes from
"Generative engine optimization" was coined in a 2023 research paper by Princeton University and partner researchers, who tested which changes to a web page made AI search engines more likely to cite it. Adding statistics, quotations and citations to credible sources helped; keyword stuffing did not. Since then GEO has become the general name for the work.
What GEO involves
1. Measurement
You can't improve what you don't measure. GEO starts with a list of buyer questions, asked across several assistants several times, to find out how often you're named and who beats you. This is a GEO audit.
2. Technical access
AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and Google's crawlers need to be allowed in your robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall or CDN. Being indexed in Bing matters, because several assistants use Bing results. An llms.txt file and structured data (schema.org) help machines read you correctly.
3. On-site answers
Pages that answer buyer questions directly, in the first two sentences, with specific facts: what you sell, who it's for, prices, comparisons, and evidence. AI assistants quote this kind of sentence.
4. Off-site presence
This is usually the biggest lever. Assistants repeat what trusted third-party sources say: review sites, "best of" lists, comparison articles, industry publications, Reddit and forums. GEO means finding the specific pages the assistants cite in your category and earning a genuine place on them.
5. Monitoring
AI answers shift as models update and new pages appear. Re-measuring monthly shows what's working.
GEO vs SEO
SEO aims to rank your page; GEO aims to get your brand into the answer, which may come from someone else's page. The two overlap heavily. See GEO vs SEO for the differences in detail.
What doesn't work
- Fake reviews and planted forum posts. They breach consumer law in the UK, US and EU, platforms remove them, and they can get a brand penalised.
- Hidden text "for AI". Instructions hidden in a page to manipulate AI answers are treated as spam.
- Anyone promising a guaranteed #1 spot in ChatGPT. Nobody controls the answers.
How to start
Measure first. Ask your top 10 buyer questions on ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity, note who's named and which sources are cited, and you'll know where the gaps are. Or request a free AI check and we'll do it for you.

Is ChatGPT naming you?
We'll run 10 buyer questions in your category through ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and email you the results.
Questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
Practically, yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the same goal: being the brand an AI answer names. Some people use AEO for featured snippets and voice answers too.
How long does GEO take to work?
For assistants that search the web live, new pages and listings can show up within weeks. Changing what a model knows without searching takes months, because it depends on training updates.
Do I still need SEO?
Yes. Assistants that search the web read the top search results, so strong SEO feeds GEO directly.
