GEO vs SEO: what changes
The real differences between generative engine optimization and search engine optimization, where they overlap, and where to spend first.

SEO (search engine optimization) aims to rank your pages in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to get your brand named and cited inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Copilot and Perplexity. They overlap heavily, because AI assistants that search the web read the top search results, but GEO depends far more on what other websites say about you.
The key differences
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Your page ranks and gets the click | Your brand is named in the answer |
| What wins | Relevant pages with authority and links | Being mentioned consistently by sources the assistant trusts |
| Where the work happens | Mostly your own site | Your site plus review sites, lists, press and communities |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mention rate, position in the answer, share of voice, citations |
| Stability | Rankings shift gradually | Answers vary run to run, so you measure many times |
| Result for the buyer | A list of links to compare | A short list of named recommendations |
What stays the same
- Crawlability: if bots can't read your site, neither search engines nor AI assistants can use it.
- Clear, useful pages that answer real questions.
- Reputation: links and mentions from respected sites help both.
- Structured data that tells machines what your products, prices and FAQs are.
What changes in practice
Write for quoting, not just ranking. Lead with a direct answer in plain words, with specific facts and numbers. AI assistants lift sentences like that.
Earn mentions, not just links. A brand named on the three review sites that dominate your category can beat a competitor with far more backlinks.
Measure differently. One check proves nothing. Ask the same questions several times on several assistants and track the share over time. See how we measure.
Where to spend first
If you have neither, fix technical SEO and AI crawler access first, since both depend on it. Then measure your AI visibility to see whether your problem is on your site (missing answer pages) or off it (missing from the sources assistants trust). That tells you whether your next pound goes on content or on outreach.

Questions
Will GEO replace SEO?
Not soon. Search is still huge, and AI assistants rely on search results. Most brands need both, with GEO's share of the budget growing.
Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
No. The overlap is real, but GEO's emphasis on third-party mentions, repeat measurement across assistants and share of voice inside answers is genuinely different work.
