What is a GEO audit?

What a GEO or AI visibility audit should include, how to tell a good one from a screenshot exercise, and what it typically costs.

By Adam, founder of AI Visibility House · Updated 27 October 2026

A GEO audit (also called an AI visibility audit) measures how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Copilot and Perplexity recommend your brand across a fixed set of buyer questions, compares you with competitors, records the sources the assistants cite, and turns the gaps into a prioritised fix list. A good one asks each question several times on each assistant, because AI answers vary.

What a GEO audit costs

Prices vary widely. Self-serve tracking tools start from around $29 to $100 a month but leave the analysis to you. Agency audits commonly run from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on depth. Ours is $497 for 50 questions across 10 assistants with three runs each and 15 to 25 fixes; see pricing and the comparison with tools.

What you do with the results

  1. Fix technical blocks first (they're quick).
  2. Publish answer pages for the buyer questions where you're never named.
  3. Go after the three to five third-party sources the assistants cite most in your category.
  4. Re-measure in 4 to 8 weeks with the same questions.

Questions

How long does a GEO audit take?

Ours takes 5 business days from when you approve the questions. Running the questions takes hours; reviewing answers and writing fixes takes the rest.

Can I do a GEO audit myself?

Yes, with a spreadsheet and patience: list the questions, ask each one on each assistant three times, record brands and sources. Expect several hours for a small version.

What's the difference between a GEO audit and an SEO audit?

An SEO audit checks your site's ability to rank. A GEO audit checks whether AI answers name you, and which outside sources decide that.
